Dissertation title:Play, Peer Relationships, and Academic Learning: Exploring Views of Teachers and Children. Sponsors: Dr. Celia Genishi and Dr. Susan Recchia

This qualitative case study explores and describes the relationships that develop when preschool children are engaged in play. It examines the connections between peer relationships, socialization, academic learning, and play through the lenses and voices of children and teachers. The study found that changes in curricula to meet increasingly academic demands within early childhood education had a clear influence upon many different aspects of learning. The children constructed important peer cultures that became the foundation for the development of those social skills that scaffold academic learning. As they engaged in play episodes of their own creation, they expanded their learning across many developmental domains and content areas of the curriculum.
