Introduction to Undergraduate Programs in School of Biological and Chemical Engineering

Applied Chemistry Program

Applied Chemistry is among the first batch of full-time bachelor's degree programs offered by the School of Biological and Chemical Engineering (SBCE). It started to enroll students nationwide in 2013.

Based on the precise demand for talents and technology in the field of medicine and chemical industry in Chongqing and Southwest China, the program enables students to engage in research & development, process improvement, manufacturing, quality testing, safety, and environmental protection, marketing, quality management and chemical education of medicine, fine chemicals, and health care products in medicine and chemical industries, colleges and universities and other related institutions, who have all-round development with strong humanistic and scientific attainment, innovative thinking, broad basic knowledge, basic theory and professional skills of chemistry, pharmacy and pharmaceutical engineering, as well as physical and mental health, honesty and trustworthiness, love and dedication, strong competitiveness and sustainable development ability.

Adhering to the schooling philosophy of "centered on student development" and based on the disciplines of Chemistry and Pharmacy and research platforms such as Chongqing Key Laboratory of Three Gorges Reservoir Area Resources (a Chongqing key lab), Institute of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and the Key Green Laboratory of Synthesis, Analysis, and Detection, this program has strengthened of its curriculum system, labs and the team-building of "double-professionally-titled teachers". The program has built up a talent training mode that helps the students enjoy the integrated development of scientific theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and humanistic quality. It employs its innovative education and teaching methods and has established a complete systematic theoretical course group and a practical teaching system for the whole process of teaching and learning. It has established a strong, passionate, and highly-respected faculty team with an appropriate personnel structure, providing a solid guarantee for improving the quality of talent training.

The program has deepened the industry-education integration and the school-enterprise collaboration to cultivate talents. It has established close cooperation relationships and training bases with enterprises and institutions such as Chongqing Pharmaceutical Research Institute, Chongqing Academy of Chinese Material Medica, Southwest Synthetic Pharmaceutical (Group) Co., Ltd., Chongqing Kerui Pharmaceutical (Group) Co., Ltd. and Chongqing Institute for Food and Drug Control to do research on basic applied technology and to do training of application-oriented talent in the pharmaceutical and chemical fields. The program is distinctive from the same or similar programs offered by other universities in that it takes chemistry as its theoretical basis and pharmacy as the professional development support, and that it has provided the pharmaceutical and chemical industries with strong technical support and professionals who become the backbones of the industries and are highly recognized by the society.


Food Science and Engineering Program

The program of Food Science and Engineering mainly cultivates application-oriented comprehensive talents who are equipped with basic theory, knowledge, and operation skills in the field of food science, and can work in scientific research, food processing, quality control, food research and development, food storage, and preservation, etc. Supported by the discipline of Food Science (which has been selected by the CMEC to be built as a city-level key discipline) and other research resources such as Chongqing Collaborative Innovation Center for Functional Food and Chongqing Innovation and Entrepreneurship Model Team for Condiments Research & Development, the program has undertaken several national, provincial and ministerial scientific research projects. Among the faculty, there are staff members titled as National Outstanding Teachers and Huang Danian Teaching Team by the CMEC. These teaching and research resources have laid a solid foundation for the development of the program. This program has established itself in Chongqing and aims at providing talents for Western China. After completing the program, the students are expected to develop in an all-around way and have impressive humanistic and social science attainments, with the basic knowledge, theories, and skills of Food Science and Engineering. The students are also expected to engage in food quality control, research and development,tosolve complex engineering problems, andtowork in related fields independently and cooperatively, who adapt to the technology development of the modern society with the awareness of innovation and entrepreneurship and engage in research and development, engineering design, production and marketing management, quality control and other related work.


Food Quality and Safety Program

The program of Food Quality and Safety is closely related to the national economy and people's livelihood. With the rapid development of the second industry and agriculture in China, the risks of various chemical, biological and physical hazards in food still exist and even become more serious to some extent, which impacts people's health and life safety, the economic development, and social stability. The number of people who are diagnosed with various food-related chronic diseases is rising, and people increasingly and earnestly demand food with higher standards of nutrition, quality, and safety.

The Food Quality and Safety program was established in 2014. The construction of the program is guided by the schooling philosophy of "industry guiding scientific research, scientific research feeding teaching, teaching promoting industry", forming a school running mode of education-research-production cooperation. After completing this program, students will be able to engage in food quality supervision, food testing, safe production, quality control, and scientific research, and will be able to work in food enterprises, quality inspection companies, or other relevant institutions or enterprises. To develop students' professional practice ability, the program, together with Chongqing Food Technology Institute, Chongqing Institute for Food and Drug Control, Chongqing Dezhuang Industrial Group, and other enterprises and institutions has jointly built a student training base to cultivate high-quality applied talents who meet the needs of the times and serve the development of food industry in Chongqing and the whole Western China. Food Science, which the program of Food Quality and Safety belongs to, has been selected by the CMEC to be built as a key discipline in 2017 and as a provincial-level first-class bachelor's degree program in 2021.


Pharmacy Program

In the context of Chongqing's action plan to promote the high-quality development of the health industry, there is an increasing demand for pharmacy professionals. The program of Pharmacy was developed from the Applied Chemistry (Chemical Engineering and Pharmacy Specialization) and Pharmaceutical Analysis in 2020. It has several provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms such as Chongqing Key Laboratory of Three Gorges Reservoir Area Resources, 2011 Functional Food Collaborative Innovation Center, and Chongqing Engineering Technology Research Center for Functional Food.

Under the guidance of "cultivating pharmacy professionals and serving the development of pharmaceutical and healthcare industry", the program respects students' need for personalized development, strengthens the cultivation of students' knowledge and ability, paying attention to the development of students' comprehensive quality and improving students' innovation and entrepreneurship ability. The program was set up from the aspects of promoting the reform of talent training mode, strengthening the training of students' practical ability and innovation and entrepreneurship ability, and deepening the integration of education and production, to empower students with the ability to carry out pharmaceutical research, development, production, and quality control, pharmacological experiment and evaluation of new pharmaceutical products, and guidance on rational and safe pharmaceutical use.


Pharmaceutical Analysis Program

Pharmaceutical Analysisis an urgently-needed undergraduate program in Chongqing and a one-of-a-kind program in Chongqing and Sichuan. This program was developed based on the Applied Chemistry Program (Drug Analysis Specialization) in 2017. The program has established multiple experimental platforms such as the Chongqing Key Laboratory of Three Gorges Reservoir Area Resources, the Institute of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, the Key Green Laboratory of Synthesis, Analysis and Detection, and the Research Center for Brain Intelligence Development of Children Aged 0-6.

Adhering to the concept of "Being established in Chongqing and serving the healthcare industries”, the program is based on the demand for talents and technology for the development of the medicine and healthcare industry in Southwest China. To deepen the collaborative training of talents between schools and enterprises, the program has established close education-research-production cooperation with Chongqing Pharmaceutical Research Institute, Chongqing Kerui Pharmaceutical (Group) Co., Ltd., Chongqing Shenghuaxi Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd, Chongqing Institute for Food and Pharmaceutical Control, and other enterprises and institutions, and has carried out pharmaceutical application-oriented talent training and applied technology cooperation, and has gradually formed the high-quality application-oriented talent training characteristics, providing important support for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry.

After completing this program, students are expected to engage in drug quality research, pharmaceutical analysis, and testing in the fields of research & development and production, clinical application and supervision and management of pharmaceuticals, etc., with the solid basic knowledge, theory, and skills of pharmaceutical analysis, as well as impressive humanistic and social science attainments, to meet the needs of the construction and economic development of the medicine and healthcare industry in Southwest China.
